Robert Belbin’s case postponed pending discussion between lawyers

st. JOHN’S, NL — Robert Belbin, accused of second-degree murder and 44 other charges, made a short video appearance in provincial court from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary Monday, March 13.
“How are you, Mr. Belbin?” Judge Paul Noble asked as Belbin appeared on screen in the courtroom.
“I’m good, Your Honor, how about yourself?” Belbin replied.
His case was postponed until March 27, after which his lawyer asked for time to finalize discussions with the Crown regarding some of the charges before going to court. While the oldest of the charges were laid last summer, new disclosures had arrived just last week, counsel advised, saying he was still waiting for the disclosure on the newest counts.
Belbin had been scheduled to go to trial Feb. 23 on charges of aggravated assault and robbery with violence in connection with a stabbing on George Street in May 2022 that left a 22-year-old Paradise man injured.
That trial was postponed at the request of his defense after Belbin was arrested Feb. 17 for the second-degree murder of 22-year-old Seamus Secord of St. John’s. That charge will be dealt with separately.
Since then, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary laid more charges against Belbin in connection with a string of violent events in the metro St. John’s region last year, including uttering threats, discharging a firearm and other firearms-related offenses in relation to a shooting in the area of Galway on May 13, 2022.
Belbin also faces new charges of assault with a weapon, discharging a firearm, and other firearms-related attacks in connection with a shooting on Goldfinch Drive in Paradise on May 21, 2022 and multiple firearms-related attacks in relation to an incident in the area of Baker Street in St. John’s on June 5, 2022.
